Hanfu is made from delicate fabrics — chiffon, silk, jacquard, and hand-embroidered brocade. With the right care, a quality Hanfu will last for years and remain as beautiful as the day it arrived. With the wrong care, even the most expensive Hanfu can be ruined in a single wash. This guide tells you exactly how to care for every type of Hanfu.
This is the complete Hanfu care guide for 2026.

Step-by-Step Washing Guide
How to wash Hanfu correctly every time.
Check the Care Label
Always check the care label before washing. Most Hanfu from Olive Girl is hand wash or delicate machine wash. If the label says dry clean only, take it to a professional cleaner.
Prepare Cold Water + Gentle Detergent
Fill a basin with cold water. Add a small amount of gentle detergent (Woolite, Delicate Wash, or silk-specific detergent for silk Hanfu). Never use hot water — it shrinks fabric and fades colors.
Gently Submerge and Swirl
Submerge the Hanfu and gently swirl it in the water for 2–3 minutes. Do not scrub, wring, or twist. For embroidered areas, gently press with your fingertips — never rub.
Rinse Thoroughly in Cold Water
Rinse in cold water until all detergent is removed. Detergent residue can stiffen fabric and attract dirt. Rinse at least twice to ensure all soap is gone.
Remove Excess Water Gently
Never wring or twist. Gently press the Hanfu against the side of the basin to remove excess water. Then lay it flat on a clean dry towel and roll the towel up to absorb more water.
Drying & Ironing Guide
How to dry and de-wrinkle Hanfu without damage.
Drying: Do This
Hang on a padded hanger in shade. Lay flat on a clean surface for jacquard and embroidered styles. Smooth out wrinkles by hand while damp. Chiffon dries quickly and wrinkles fall out naturally when hung.
Drying: Never Do This
Never tumble dry — heat shrinks and damages delicate fabrics. Never dry in direct sunlight — UV fades colors. Never wring or twist to remove water. Never use a dryer even on low heat.
Ironing: Do This
Use a garment steamer — the safest method for all Hanfu. If ironing: low heat, pressing cloth, reverse side only. For chiffon: steam from 5cm distance. For embroidery: steam only, never touch with iron.
Ironing: Never Do This
Never iron directly on embroidery — it flattens and damages threads permanently. Never use high heat on chiffon or silk. Never iron without a pressing cloth. Never iron when completely dry — slightly damp is easier.
Storage Guide
How to store Hanfu to keep it beautiful for years.
Use Padded Hangers
Always hang Hanfu on padded or velvet hangers. Wire hangers leave permanent marks on delicate chiffon and silk. Wide-shoulder hangers prevent shoulder distortion on heavier jacquard styles.
Breathable Garment Bags
Store in breathable cotton or non-woven garment bags. Never use plastic bags or dry-cleaning plastic — they trap moisture and cause mildew. Breathable bags protect from dust while allowing air circulation.
Away from Sunlight
Store away from direct sunlight and UV light. Even indirect sunlight through a window will fade colors over time. A dark wardrobe or closet is ideal.
Cedar or Lavender for Moths
Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets to your wardrobe to repel moths. Moths are attracted to natural fibers like silk and can cause irreparable damage. Replace cedar blocks every 6 months as the scent fades.
Long-Term Storage: Fold with Tissue Paper
For long-term storage (more than 3 months): fold carefully with acid-free tissue paper between layers to prevent color transfer and crease marks. Store in a cool, dry, dark place. Air out every 3–6 months.
“A quality Hanfu, properly cared for, will outlast any fast fashion garment by decades. The chiffon that flows so beautifully today will flow just as beautifully in ten years — if you treat it with the respect it deserves.”
