Hanfu is not one garment. It is 3,000 years of Chinese fashion history — a living archive of how the Han Chinese people dressed across dynasties, each with its own silhouette, color palette, and cultural meaning. Understanding Hanfu history transforms how you see every garment.

This is the complete dynasty-by-dynasty guide to Hanfu history.

The Direct Answer

Hanfu has 3,000+ years of history, originating in the Shang dynasty (~1600 BCE). It was suppressed during the Qing dynasty (1644–1912) and is now experiencing a global cultural revival. Each dynasty produced distinct styles — Han, Tang, Song, and Ming are the four most influential.

The Complete Hanfu Dynasty Timeline

3,000 years in one guide.

Shang Dynasty

~1600–1046 BCE

The Origin — The Crossed Collar is Born

The earliest Hanfu. Simple construction: a crossed-collar top (right over left) with a wrapped skirt. The jiaoling youren — the crossed collar, right over left — is established as the defining feature of Chinese dress. This single design decision survives 3,000 years unchanged. Bronze Age China, oracle bone inscriptions, and silk weaving all emerge in this era.

Zhou Dynasty

1046–256 BCE

Formalization — Dress Codes and Color Symbolism

The Zhou dynasty formalizes Hanfu dress codes. Color becomes deeply symbolic: yellow for the emperor, red for celebration, black for mourning, blue for scholars. The five-color system (wuse) governs dress for the next 2,000 years. Confucian philosophy shapes dress as a moral and social practice — how you dress reflects who you are.

Han Dynasty

206 BCE – 220 CE

The Golden Age — Hanfu Gets Its Name

The Han dynasty gives Hanfu its name: “Han clothing.” The Ruqun (top + skirt) becomes the dominant style for women. The Shenyi (a one-piece robe) is the formal garment for men and women. The Silk Road opens, bringing new fabrics and dyes. Han dynasty Hanfu is characterized by flowing lines, deep colors, and elegant simplicity. This is the foundation of all later Hanfu styles.

Tang Dynasty

618 – 907 CE

The Most Dramatic Era — Wide Sleeves and Bold Color

Tang dynasty is Hanfu's most dramatic and internationally recognized era. China is the world's most powerful empire — cosmopolitan, confident, and culturally dominant. Tang Hanfu reflects this: wide sleeves (daxiu) that extend 60–120cm beyond the hand, high waistbands just below the bust, rich crimson and gold color combinations, and elaborate phoenix and peony embroidery. Tang dynasty Hanfu is the most popular style for photoshoots and dramatic occasions today.

Song Dynasty

960 – 1279 CE

Refined Elegance — The Most Wearable Hanfu Era

Song dynasty Hanfu is a deliberate refinement of Tang excess. Narrower sleeves, natural waist placement, lighter colors, and elegant simplicity. Song dynasty China is the world's most economically advanced civilization — and its fashion reflects a sophisticated, understated confidence. Song Ruqun is the most popular Hanfu style for modern everyday wear because it is practical, comfortable, and beautiful without being theatrical.

Ming Dynasty

1368 – 1644 CE

The Last Great Dynasty — Ma Mian Skirt and Heavy Embroidery

Ming dynasty is the last great Hanfu dynasty and the source of the most recognizable Hanfu styles today. The Ma Mian Skirt (Horse-Face Skirt) reaches its peak — four panels with deep box pleats and elaborately embroidered flat front panels. Heavy embroidery (phoenix, dragon, peony, cloud motifs) becomes the defining feature of formal Ming Hanfu. The Ming dynasty ends in 1644 when Manchu rulers of the Qing dynasty conquer China and impose their own dress codes, suppressing Hanfu for nearly 300 years.

Qing Dynasty

1644 – 1912 CE

Suppression — Hanfu Banned for 268 Years

The Manchu rulers of the Qing dynasty impose the "Queue Order" — Han Chinese men must adopt Manchu hairstyles and dress or face execution. Hanfu is effectively banned for formal occasions. The Qipao (Cheongsam) emerges in the 1920s from Manchu fashion fused with Western tailoring — and becomes the dominant image of "Chinese dress" in Western consciousness, displacing Hanfu's 3,000-year legacy.

Modern Revival

2000s – Present

The Renaissance — Hanfu Goes Global

In 2003, Wang Letian walks through Zhengzhou in full Hanfu, sparking national media coverage and igniting the modern Hanfu revival. By the 2010s, Hanfu communities form across China and internationally. By 2026, Hanfu is worn by millions worldwide — at Ren Faires, photoshoots, Chinese New Year celebrations, garden parties, and as everyday fashion. The revival is not nostalgia. It is a living cultural movement reclaiming 3,000 years of heritage.

The Four Dynasties That Define Modern Hanfu

What each dynasty contributes to the Hanfu you wear today.

Han Dynasty

The Foundation

Ruqun as the dominant style. The name "Hanfu." Flowing lines and elegant simplicity. The template for all later Hanfu.

Tang Dynasty

The Drama

Wide sleeves. High waistband. Bold color. Elaborate embroidery. The most photogenic and internationally recognized Hanfu era.

Song Dynasty

The Refinement

Narrower sleeves. Natural waist. Subtle colors. Elegant simplicity. The most popular era for modern everyday Hanfu wear.

Ming Dynasty

The Legacy

Ma Mian Skirt. Heavy embroidery. Structured construction. The last great Hanfu dynasty and the source of the most recognizable styles today.

“Hanfu survived 3,000 years, a 268-year ban, and the rise of Western fashion. It is surviving again now — not as a museum piece, but as a living garment worn by millions of people who understand that beauty has a history worth knowing.”
