The Real Issue

Sizing is the #1 reason Western women don’t buy hanfu. This guide fixes that.

Most hanfu sold online is sized for Chinese bodies — smaller bust, narrower shoulders, shorter torso. If you buy without checking the size chart carefully, you will get something that doesn’t fit. This guide tells you exactly how to measure yourself, how to read hanfu size charts, what to do if you’re between sizes, and which styles are most forgiving for Western body proportions.

Step 1: How to Measure Yourself

You need three measurements. Take them in inches with a soft measuring tape.

B

Bust

Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Do not pull tight — the tape should be snug but not compressing. This is your bust measurement.

Why it matters:

Critical for robes, wide-sleeve styles, and any top-heavy silhouette. Less critical for Ma Mian skirts.

W

Waist

Measure around the narrowest part of your torso — usually 1–2 inches above your belly button. Stand naturally, do not suck in. This is your natural waist measurement.

Why it matters:

The most critical measurement for Ma Mian skirts, ruqun sets, and any wrap-waist style. The wrap construction allows 2–3 inches of adjustment.

H

Hip

Measure around the fullest part of your hips — usually 7–9 inches below your natural waist. Keep the tape parallel to the floor. This is your hip measurement.

Why it matters:

Important for fitted qipao and structured dresses. Less critical for pleated skirts and wide-sleeve robes, which have natural volume at the hip.

L

Height

Your height determines skirt and dress length. Hanfu is traditionally designed for heights of 5’2”–5’6”. If you are taller, look for “long” or “tall” options, or check the listed garment length against your measurements.

Olive Girl range:

Length options available for 5’2” to 5’10”. Contact us for custom length requests.

Step 2: Reading the Size Chart

Olive Girl size charts are in inches. Here is how to use them.

Size Bust (in) Waist (in) Hip (in) US Dress Size
S 33–34 26–27 35–36 US 4–6
M 35–36 28–29 37–38 US 8–10
L 37–38 30–31 39–40 US 12–14
XL 39–41 32–34 41–43 US 16–18
XXL 42–44 35–37 44–46 US 20–22

* US dress size equivalents are approximate. Always use your inch measurements to determine size.

Step 3: Which Hanfu Style Fits Western Bodies Best

Different hanfu styles have very different fit profiles. Here is what to know before you choose.

Most
Forgiving

Ma Mian Skirt

The wrap waistband adjusts 2–3 inches. The pleated sides create natural volume at the hip. Waist is the only critical measurement. Best first purchase for Western women.

Very
Forgiving

Wide-Sleeve Robe (Daxiushan)

The flowing silhouette accommodates different proportions. Bust is the main measurement. The wide sleeves and open front create natural ease throughout the body.

Flexible

Ruqun Set (Top + Skirt)

The separate top and skirt allow you to mix sizes — size up in the top if needed while keeping the skirt size. The wrap skirt is forgiving; the top requires more attention to bust and shoulder measurements.

Size
Carefully

Modern Improved Qipao

Modern versions with stretch fabric are more forgiving than traditional qipao. Measure bust, waist, and hip carefully. Size up if between sizes. Avoid traditional non-stretch qipao as a first purchase.

Measure
Precisely

Traditional Fitted Qipao

Requires precise measurements at bust, waist, and hip. No stretch, no adjustment. Not recommended as a first hanfu purchase for Western women. Best ordered after you know your hanfu size from a more forgiving style.

The Golden Rule

If you are between sizes, always size up.

Hanfu has less ease than Western clothing. A size too small will be uncomfortable, restrict movement, and look wrong. A size too large can be adjusted with the wrap and tie construction of most hanfu styles. When in doubt, go up. Olive Girl offers 30-day returns — sizing is completely risk-free.
