Wearing Hanfu for the first time is easier than it looks — but there is one rule that is non-negotiable, one mistake that changes everything, and a few techniques that make the difference between a beautiful look and a frustrating one. This guide covers all of it.
This is the complete beginner's guide to wearing Hanfu in 2026.
The One Rule That Cannot Be Broken
The collar crosses right over left. Always. This is called jiaoling youren. It has been the rule for 3,000 years. Left over right is how the deceased are dressed in Chinese tradition. Right over left. Always.
The Complete Dressing Guide — Step by Step
For Ruqun (the most common Hanfu style).
Dynasty-Specific Dressing Notes
Key differences between the most popular styles.
Tang Dynasty
High Waist — Just Below the Bust
Tie the sash just below the bust, not at the natural waist. This creates the elongated silhouette characteristic of Tang dynasty Hanfu. The wide sleeves should fall naturally — do not roll or fold them. When posing for photos, extend the arms slightly to show the full sleeve width.
Song Dynasty
Natural Waist — Elegant and Practical
Tie the sash at the natural waist. The Song dynasty silhouette is more practical and comfortable than Tang — appropriate for all-day wear. The narrower sleeves are easier to manage. This is the most beginner-friendly dynasty style.
Ming Dynasty (Ma Mian Skirt)
Structured — Check the Pleats
The Ma Mian Skirt has flat front panels and deep box pleats at the sides. When putting on the skirt, ensure the flat panels are at the front and back, and the pleats fall at the sides. The waistband ties at the front. Check that the pleats hang evenly.
For Photoshoots
Tighten Everything Before Shooting
Before a photoshoot, tighten the sash slightly more than comfortable — movement loosens it. Check the collar position every 15–20 minutes. For wide-sleeve Hanfu: practice the sleeve extension pose before the shoot. The sleeves should extend fully from the wrist, not bunch at the elbow.
The 5 Most Common Mistakes — And How to Fix Them
Every beginner makes these. Now you won't.
“The first time you wear Hanfu correctly — collar right over left, sash tied neatly, skirt falling perfectly — something shifts. You are not wearing a garment. You are wearing 3,000 years of history. And it fits.”

How do you wear Hanfu? +
Inner layer first → cross collar right over left → tie inner sash → put on skirt → tie outer sash → mirror check → add accessories. The most important rule: collar right over left (jiaoling youren). Always.
How do you cross the collar on Hanfu? +
Right over left. Always. This is jiaoling youren — the defining feature of all authentic Hanfu for 3,000 years. Stand facing a mirror: the collar forms a V-shape with the right panel on top. Never left over right.
How do you tie the Hanfu sash? +
Wrap around the waist once, cross at the back, bring both ends to the front, tie a bow or knot. Snug but comfortable — two fingers should fit between sash and body. Song dynasty: natural waist. Tang dynasty: just below the bust.
How do you wear a Ruqun? +
Ru (top) first with collar right over left, tie inner sash, wrap Qun (skirt) at natural waist or below bust, tie outer sash, check collar, add accessories. The Ruqun is the most beginner-friendly Hanfu style.
What is the most common mistake when wearing Hanfu? +
Crossing the collar left over right (the most serious mistake), skirt sitting too low, forgetting the inner sash, sash too tight, and not rechecking the collar after putting on the skirt.
